Cockatoo Island has been many things throughout time, including a bustling dockyard and a prison where convicts had to do hard labour. Our curriculum-based education programs immerse students in this history through opportunities to interact with the island’s archaeological features and objects
In addition to complementing classroom lessons, our programs are delivered by specialist education guides who use scaffolding, Socratic questioning and other strategies to help students develop their historical enquiry and critical thinking skills. Plus, we cater for local, regional and remote school groups of all sizes as well as homeschool groups.
[Update: Our education programs are being relaunched in time for Term 1 2027 – and teachers can make a booking now! These new experiences were developed to help teachers meet the requirements of the updated K–6 HSIE and NSW History 7–10 syllabuses in NSW. They will match the high standards of our current education programs, which will continued to be offered until the end of Term 4 2026.]
