At just 17.9 hectares, Cockatoo Island is easily explored by foot. There are signs to help you navigate the island and lots to discover.
The island has two distinct areas: the lower island which was the centre for shipbuilding and industrial activity, and the upper island which originally housed convicts and, later shipwrights, draftsmen and managers. A walk around these areas can take about 30 to 45 minutes each.
Wander around the island on a self-guided tour. You can pick up a map from the Muster Station, after disembarking from the ferry, or download the Cockatoo Island Visitor Guide before you go.
We want your visit to Cockatoo Island to be enjoyable and safe. You will notice that parts of the island are construction sites. Please do not enter these areas. We apologise for any inconvenience.
More generally, do exercise care when exploring the island. Remember, it's a former industrial site. So, watch your step, observe all signs and, if in doubt, talk to one of the our volunteers.
Cockatoo Island has wheelchair access and disabled toilet facilities. Most areas of the island are wheelchair accessible, though keep in mind that the island is an industrial heritage site so some of the surfaces are uneven. There is one medium incline from the lower island to the upper island.
For more information on current conditions, have a word to our volunteers in the Muster Station upon your arrival, or contact the Harbour Trust on (02) 8969 2100 or email: info@harbourtrust.gov.au.
