Water tower on Cockatoo Island

Cockatoo Island is one of the best places in Sydney to appreciate the harbour. Visitors to the island invariably comment on the magnificent views of the harbour bridge, the city skyline and the wonderful juxtaposition of headlands, suburbs and water.

The island itself is a fascinating place. Where else can you pitch a tent and camp so close to the city. Or take a self-guided tour of a former shipbuilding site and convict prison. There are guided tours for anyone who wants an in-depth introduction to the island's history. And in 2008 an audio tour will be available for a dramatic account of convict days and the shipbuilding era. In one of the island's two tunnels the mood is set by a soundscape.

Visit the island with a picnic basket or buy lunch at the Muster Station cafe. There are many spots around the island to sit and contemplate the views and enjoy the gritty, industrial character of the island's buildings and open spaces.

Explore the harbour and hire a kayak on Cockatoo Island.

School groups are regular visitors to Cockatoo Island. Excursions are aligned to the history and geography curricula.
