Our dedicated team of volunteers is a vital part of Cockatoo Island.
Volunteers help visitors to discover Cockatoo Island and share a love of this unique Sydney landmark and its fascinating history.
There are a number of different volunteer roles on Cockatoo Island ranging from visitor services, heritage gardening to machinery restoration.
Find out more about becoming a Harbour Trust volunteer
Cockatoo Island is studded with cranes and relics from its days as Australia's largest shipyard. One of the Harbour Trust's volunteer programs is dedicated to ensuring the restoration of these vital pieces of the island's history.
The current volunteer team includes former tradesmen and handymen. From their Cockatoo Island base the team has already restored a number of cranes, an 18th century cannon and is conserving the launch from the HMAS Sydney. The next challenge is restoring the oldest crane on the island, a steam crane, which was built in 1891 at Morts Dock in Sydney.
The Volunteer Team is expanding and will now work on the island every Monday and Tuesday. The Harbour Trust is looking for more volunteers keen to join the team in their hands-on work.
The team needs pressure vessel welders, sign writers, joiners, shipwrights and all trades and researchers with an understanding of engineering. But even those without specific technical skills are welcome. Good handyman skills and a passionate interest in maritime machinery and industrial heritage are all that's required.
