OUTPOST 2013 ANNOUNCEMENT

Wednesday, 19 December 2012

Sydney Harbour Federation Trust Executive Director Geoff Bailey today announced with regret that the Outpost Street Art event originally scheduled for April 2013 has been cancelled.

The Harbour Trust was thrilled with the public response to Outpost 2011 and believes that a Street Art festival is a great fit for Cockatoo Island. While the project can no longer proceed in 2013, the Harbour Trust is committed to reviewing future opportunities for the event.

The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust is a self-funding organisation established by the Australian Government to protect the heritage and improve public access to former defence and Commonwealth sites around Sydney Harbour.

"The continuing challenging commercial environment has put significant pressure on the Harbour Trust and we are taking the difficult decision to cancel Outpost for 2013 so we can focus on delivering a wide-range of services such as the improvement to infrastructure, facilities and accommodation to improve visitor experience and support future events," said Bailey.

The successful 2011 Outpost was a free event that celebrated street art from Australia and around the world. It won the Best New Event in the 2012 Australian Event Awards and was the first event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. "While we are committed to Outpost and have had strong support from sponsors, artists, the community and media, it requires significant additional funding to underpin this free event. In the current operating environment, our traditional revenue base has been eroded and we have had to take some tough decisions with our limited funds." said Bailey.
