The17th Biennale of Sydney: More than 157,000 visitors flocked to the island to see the free major visual arts event on Cockatoo Island, which ran from 12 May until 1 August 2010. Over 120 of the world's most innovative installation artworks by 56 artists were displayed across the island for the three months. Information about the 2012 18th Biennale of Sydney coming soon.
In 2009, Ken Unsworth, one of Australia's pre-eminent contemporary artists exhibited a major new project on Cockatoo Island, A Ringing Glass (Rilke), in honour of his wife Elisabeth. Cockatoo Island's grand industrial Turbine Shed hosted the exhibition, a series of extraordinary kinetic and multimedia installations set inside architectural rooms specially constructed for the occasion, including an exquisite ballroom.
As part of Sydney Festival 2009, the sandstone workshops and industrial spaces of Cockatoo hosted over 12,000 music fans over a weekend for All Tomorrow's Parties, an event curated by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
