Campground is now open!

Sydney's only campground in the middle of its world-famous harbour is now open.

Who runs the campsite?

Cockatoo Island and Cockatoo Island Camping is managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust. Find out more about the Harbour Trust.

What kind of camping experience can I expect?

On Cockatoo Island you will have a camping experience very different to traditional bush camping. With space at a premium, sites are small and close together. Many people use their site as a "bedroom" and use the campground kitchen as well as the island's many open spaces for eating, picnics and other leisure activities. Since fires and stoves are prohibited, why not get to know some new friends in the campground kitchen or have a meal at the Muster Station Cafe. And whilst harbourside camping is spectacular, the harbour can get busy, so light sleepers may wish to bring earplugs. Finally, why not make Cockatoo Island Camping your base for a stay in Sydney and take the ferry each day into the city.

Can I stay on Cockatoo on New Year's eve?

Yes, the campground will be open on New Year's eve 2008 and special camping packages will be available.

Why are the sites so small?

Like anywhere else in central Sydney, space on Cockatoo Island is at a premium. We want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to enjoy a camping experience on the island and a 4 metres x 4 metres site offers the best compromise between space and privacy. At the discretion of the booking office, more room to spread out may be available at off-peak times. In the meantime, bring a small tent and get to know your neighbours!

Is there a maximum stay?

Yes, 30 days is the maximum stay. No returns possible within 7 days.

Why are there no powered sites?

Two reasons. One, because the less power the campsite uses, the less impact we have on the environment. Two, because power is often used to create sound and light, and we want to encourage people to respect their camping neighbours.

Personal lockers are available for hire with internal power points for recharging of mobile phones and laptops.

Can I access the internet?

Internet access, both wired and wireless, will be available shortly.

Can I go swimming?

Current Cockatoo Island regulations do not permit swimming in the harbour for safety reasons.

Is there a games/TV room?

Not at present. We'll consider it if there is strong demand.

What if I miss the last ferry?

You'll need to call a water taxi. Check details of water taxi access.

What if I don't want to cook?

The Muster Station Café is a fully licensed café adjacent to the campground. Please contact the café directly to order.

Why are there no waste bins?

Because all waste has to be taken off the island by barge and trucked to a recycling centre. This is expensive and damaging to the environment. So we'd like all campers to help us and the environment by taking their rubbish home with them.
