Cockatoo Island has been used for incarceration, ship building and engineering and this diverse activity is reflected in its buildings and infrastructure. Many of the existing facilities on Cockatoo Island are now available for adaptive re-use. The island's location and character accommodate activities with strong links to the working harbour or visitor experiences, including hospitality, arts, tourism, recreation and education. Facilities range from waterfront workshops, slipways and cavernous warehouses to quirky studios and dramatic exhibition spaces.
